Xmas, a Christian holiday?

I find my self thinking about this, sure Christmas is  a Christian holiday, isn't it? But when you ask people, the first thing that comes to mind about it is exchange presents or maybe that is a time of joy and happiness. I must tell that my experience is with Brazilian people, and specifically Brazilian people from Rio de Janeiro, Cariocas as we call them.

I get to read a lot of skeptics web sites, I am my self agnostic, among those I read this article that speaks of war against Xmas. I don't like this point of view, and it reminds me of a group of radical leftists here in Brazil that are against the Halloween, the idea is simple US is bad, Halloween comes from the US then Halloween is bad. What they ignore is that Halloween in Brazil has little in common with the Halloween Americans have. The Halloween we have here is strictly a party theme, where people goes with monster or horror films themed costumes. There is no trick or treating in Brazil (during the "Cosme e Damião" party in September kids usually get the treats part of the deal).

So in the same way that I believe that those radicals lefties are wrong in trying to "defeat" Halloween, I believe that agnostics, skeptics and atheistic people should not fight Christmas, they should simply adapt it to their taste. After all the Crhistmas we know today is a collage of several traditions from arround the world, many of them were adapted from pagan religions. So simply get the best parts, in my opinion is the decoration of the cities, and drop the bad religious stuff, you may find out that there is very little to drop in the end... :-)
